In compliance with Pennsylvania Guidelines (#H514.030P, 1986) all school employees (full-time and part-time) will be TB tested prior to employment. The statement of negative TB test from their doctor will be on the School Personnel Health Record (#511.340) submitted prior to employment. The employment will not require additional TB testing unless the employee develops signs and symptoms compatible with tuberculosis disease (a productive cough which does not respond to usual medical treatment within 14 days, significant weight loss, fever, night sweats, hemoplysis). If the above symptoms develop, the employee will be required to have a chest X-ray and evaluation by a physician for the presence of infectious tuberculosis.

Susquehanna Township School District is in a low incident TB area. There TB testing is required only every third year for all students entering school for the first time and for all those in the ninth grade. If the percentage of positive reactions to the TB skin test increases among our student body, the district will have to return to yearly testing of all students upon entering school and all ninth graders.

Anyone who provides regular direct services to students must provide a doctor’s statement of negative TB testing to the principal or his/her designee prior to meeting with students. Those people covered by the above policy include but are not limited to student teachers, parent volunteers, and coaches.

The district will pay the cost of TB tests for parent volunteers and chaperones. Requests should be made to the building principal who will approve the payment of testing by the school physician and forward the request to the school nurse who will make the arrangements with the doctor’s office. The school nurse will check the person for reaction and send the request with principal’s approval and doctors bill to the director of pupil services for payment. Prior approval by the principal is necessary before any arrangements for testing can be made; otherwise the parent will have to assume responsibility for payment.
