POLICY

 SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS

 

Principals or their delegated representatives shall be responsible for contacting and assigning eligible substitutes whenever the regular classroom teacher is absent. The substitute assigned must be selected from the approved eligibility list. When assigning substitutes, principals shall consider the following priorities:

 

(a)          individuals who meet the requirements for certification in the teaching area or field

 

(b)          the next best qualified certificated individual

 

When a substitute is assigned, it is the responsibility of the building principal to orient the substitute concerning school procedures and to see that the substitute is given proper guidance on the instructional material to be considered.

 

At the conclusion of the school day, each substitute is to complete the required form indicating the instructional program completed and the plans for the following school day. Failure to complete this form in is entirety will be cause to remove the substitute’s name form the approved list of substitutes.

 

Evaluation of the effectiveness of substitutes is the responsibility of the building principal. Principals should inform the superintendent whenever a substitute performs ineffectively or is otherwise of questionable value to the school system. Substitutes who do not meet the accepted standards of effectiveness will be removed form the substitute list.
